Etsy Fee Calculator

Why Most Etsy Sellers Are Unknowingly Working at a Loss in 2026

You sold a $45 item. You expected $45. Etsy sent you $39.80. Five different fees took $5.20 — and you probably didn’t even notice.

What are Etsy fees?

If you’re looking for a free Etsy fee calculator, it’s important to understand all hidden costs.

The Complete Etsy Fee Structure: All 5 Fees Explained

Most Etsy sellers only know about the listing fee. There are actually five separate charges applied to every sale — and together they take far more than most sellers expect.

Fee TypeRateApplied To
Listing fee$0.20 flatPer item listed (every 4 months)
Transaction fee6.5%Item price + shipping charged
Payment processing3% + $0.25Total order value (US)
Offsite Ads (if applicable)12% or 15%Sales attributed to Etsy ads
Etsy Plus subscription$10/monthOptional upgrade

Combined effective rate on a typical US sale: 9.5% to 12%+ per transaction

This means for every $100 you sell on Etsy, you keep between $88 and $90.50 before accounting for your materials, time, and shipping costs.

Full Etsy Fee Calculation: Step by Step

Let’s calculate the fees on a real Etsy sale: a handmade candle listed at $38 with $7 shipping. Total order value: $45.

FeeCalculationAmount
Listing feeFlat per item$0.20
Transaction fee$45 × 6.5%$2.93
Payment processing($45 × 3%) + $0.25$1.60
Total fees$4.73
You receive$45 − $4.73$40.27

That’s 10.5% gone before you account for the wax, fragrance, jar, wick, label, and the two hours it took to make it.

Etsy Fee Table: What You Actually Receive

Sale PriceEtsy FeesYou ReceiveEffective Rate
$10$1.18$8.8211.8%
$20$1.85$18.159.3%
$35$2.68$32.327.7%
$50$3.50$46.507.0%
$75$5.15$69.856.9%
$100$6.75$93.256.8%
$150$10.00$140.006.7%
$200$13.25$186.756.6%

Calculation assumes US payment processing at 3% + $0.25, excludes listing fee and Offsite Ads.

The Offsite Ads Fee: The Biggest Shock for Growing Sellers

This is the fee that catches successful Etsy sellers completely off guard.

When your shop reaches $10,000 in sales in any 12-month period, Etsy automatically enrolls you in Offsite Ads. You cannot opt out. Ever.

Etsy then advertises your products on Google Shopping, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. If a customer clicks one of those ads and buys from you within 30 days, Etsy charges you:

  • 15% if your shop has made under $10,000 total lifetime
  • 12% if your shop has made over $10,000 total lifetime

Full cost example — $80 item sold through an Offsite Ad:

FeeAmount
Offsite Ad fee (12%)$9.60
Transaction fee (6.5%)$5.20
Payment processing (3% + $0.25)$2.65
Listing fee$0.20
Total fees$17.65
You receive$62.35

That’s 22.1% of your sale price gone. For handmade items with high material costs, this can easily wipe out all profit.

The Reverse Calculation: How to Price for Profit on Etsy

Most Etsy sellers price based on what they think the market will accept. Profitable sellers price based on what they need to earn.

Formula to ensure you receive your target amount:

Charge = (Cost of goods + Target profit + $0.20 listing) ÷ (1 − 0.095)

Using 9.5% as the combined effective fee rate (transaction + processing)

Pricing example:

ItemMaterialsYour timeTarget profitMin. Etsy price
Candle$8$12 (1hr)$10$33.15
Print$2$6 (0.5hr)$15$25.41
Jewelry$15$20 (1.5hr)$20$60.77
Digital file$0$5$20$27.62

If your prices are below these minimums, you are losing money on every sale.

Etsy vs Shopify: Complete Cost Comparison

The most common question from growing Etsy sellers: when should I switch to Shopify?

Monthly SalesEtsy FeesShopify BasicShopify Saves
$500~$47$57 ($39 + $18)Etsy cheaper
$1,000~$95$68 ($39 + $29)Shopify saves $27
$2,000~$190$97 ($39 + $58)Shopify saves $93
$5,000~$475$184 ($39 + $145)Shopify saves $291
$10,000~$950+$328 ($39 + $289)Shopify saves $622+

Tipping point: Around $1,200-1,500/month in sales, Shopify Basic becomes cheaper than Etsy — and the savings grow dramatically from there.

However, Shopify requires you to drive your own traffic. Etsy’s built-in marketplace still delivers customers to you for free. Many successful sellers run both simultaneously.

Etsy Fees by Country: International Sellers

Payment processing fees vary by location:

CountryProcessing FeeExample on $100 sale
United States3% + $0.25$3.25
United Kingdom4% + £0.20£4.20
Canada3% + C$0.25C$3.25
Australia3% + A$0.25A$3.25
Eurozone4% + €0.30€4.30

Transaction fees (6.5%) and listing fees ($0.20) are the same worldwide.

Real Seller Scenarios: Annual Etsy Fee Impact

Scenario 1 — Beginner Handmade Seller Monthly sales: 20 items × $25 = $500/month Monthly Etsy fees: ~$47 Annual Etsy fees: ~$564 Offsite Ads (if applicable): additional 12-15% on some sales

Scenario 2 — Established Print Shop Monthly sales: 100 items × $30 = $3,000/month Monthly Etsy fees: ~$285 Annual Etsy fees: ~$3,420

At this volume, switching to Shopify saves approximately $1,500-2,000/year.

Scenario 3 — Digital Downloads Seller Monthly sales: 500 files × $8 = $4,000/month Monthly Etsy fees: ~$380 Annual Etsy fees: ~$4,560

Note: Digital products have no shipping costs but still incur all Etsy fees. The 6.5% transaction fee on a $8 item = $0.52 per sale. At 500 sales/month, that’s $260/month in transaction fees alone.

6 Strategies to Maximize Profit on Etsy

1. Always calculate fees before setting prices Use the calculator above before listing any item. Never guess. Price based on real numbers.

2. Build in the Offsite Ads fee if you’re near $10,000/year If your shop is approaching $10,000 in annual sales, assume you’ll be enrolled in Offsite Ads. Price as if you’ll pay 12% on some sales — treat it as insurance against a profit surprise.

3. Don’t offer “free shipping” without adjusting your price Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping amount you charge. Offering free shipping by baking it into the item price results in paying 6.5% on your shipping cost too. Calculate carefully.

4. Raise prices — you’re probably undercharging Studies of Etsy sellers consistently show most undercharge for their time. Use our pricing table above to check if your current prices cover costs, fees, and profit.

5. Opt out of Offsite Ads before you hit $10,000 If you haven’t yet earned $10,000 on Etsy, opt out of Offsite Ads now. Go to Etsy shop manager → Marketing → Offsite Ads → Turn off. Once you cross $10,000, you lose this option permanently.

6. Consider opening a Shopify store alongside Etsy Use Etsy for discovery and new customer acquisition. Use Shopify for repeat customers and higher-margin sales. Many sellers build their email list through Etsy and then shift loyal customers to their own store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Etsy charge the listing fee even if the item doesn’t sell? Yes. The $0.20 listing fee is charged when you create or renew a listing, regardless of whether it sells. Each listing is active for 4 months, then auto-renews for another $0.20 unless you turn off auto-renew.

Does Etsy take a percentage of the shipping I charge? Yes. Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee applies to both the item price and the shipping amount you charge. This surprises many sellers. If you charge $5 for shipping, Etsy takes $0.33 from that too.

Can Etsy sellers receive payments outside of Etsy Payments? In most countries, Etsy requires sellers to use Etsy Payments (their integrated payment system). In some markets, PayPal is still an option, but Etsy is phasing this out globally.

What is the Etsy Offsite Ads opt-out deadline? You can opt out of Offsite Ads at any time before your shop reaches $10,000 in total sales. After that, participation is mandatory and permanent.

Does Etsy charge VAT on its fees? Etsy adds VAT to seller fees for businesses in VAT-applicable countries (UK, EU). The VAT appears as a separate line item on your monthly billing statement.

Is Etsy still profitable in 2026 with all these fees? Yes — but only with correct pricing. Sellers who account for all fees in their pricing can run profitable Etsy shops. Sellers who guess at pricing often discover they’re working at a loss after accounting for materials, time, and fees.

How does Etsy calculate fees for bundle listings? Each item in a bundle is charged a separate $0.20 listing fee. The transaction and processing fees apply to the total bundle price, not per item.
